The fourth annual Women in Sport Day took place during the 2017 United States Open at Drexel.
The day began with a special lunchtime panel discussion at the Daskalakis Athletic Center. Moderated by Katline Couwels (the director of MSquash), the panelists included Niki Clement (head men’s and women’s coach at Haverford College), Jenny Duncalf (world No.30 and PSA women’s president) and Amy Gross (former Team USA member and performance coach).
More than sixty women and men came to the discussion, including coaches, squash community leaders, former and current PSA players, Drexel student-athletes, SquashSmarts staff and friends of the game.
The panelists led a compelling conversation about women in sports, considering issues about motivation, competition, social constructs, confidence and mental and emotional flexibility.
Later in the afternoon the annual SquashSmarts girls practice was held on the courts at the Kline & Specter Squash Center at Drexel. A cohort of PSA players—Nicol David, Reyna Pacheco, Sarah-Jane Perry and Daryl Selby joined thirty SquashSmarts girls at the practice, giving them a first-hand look at life on the professional tour.
