Sharma (L) and FIteni will compete in U.S. Open men’s qualifying next month.
Men’s pre-qualifying for the 2015 Delaware Investments U.S. Open Championships concluded Thursday evening with Parth Sharma and Michael Fiteni earning qualifying positions next month after two highly competitive match ups at Drexel University’s Kline & Specter Squash Center.
The first match featured Sharma, a Philadelphia Cricket Club teaching professional, against Fairmount Athletic Club head professional Lyall Paterson. Both players maintained an exceptionally high pace of play, splitting the first two games. Sharma continued to pressure Paterson in the final two games and pulled the match out in four games despite a furious fourth-game comeback by Paterson, 11-8, 5-11, 11-3, 11-8.
The later match of the evening pitted two Fairmount Athletic Club teaching professionals against each other as Fiteni took on Brad Thompson. Though from the same club, the players brought very different styles to the court, with Fiteni changing pace and looking to attack, and Thompson using his strength and fitness to extend rallies. As in the first match, the players split the first two games. Fiteni weathered a comeback by Thompson in the third game, and proceeded to control the fourth to win the match 11-13, 11-8, 11-9, 11-7.
Fiteni and Sharma will next compete in the first round of U.S. Open qualifying as the tournament kicks off October 8, 2015.
